Do It Yourself

I'm not going to need a new mower in the spring!

Honda Walk-behind Mower: I hit some horse shoes in the fall with my 3-year-new Honda walk-behind mower. Talked with a guy at a mower repair place in the neighborhood and the guy said the whole mower was shot. The shaft was bent and it was too dangerous to use it. Instead of helping me correctly assess the options, he tried to sell a reconditioned Honda mower for $350! Why would I want to buy it when I can get a brand new one for $399?

I spent more time with the mower and decided that the blade holder was bent and the shaft was probably okay. Replaced the blade holder and its seems to be running fine. At least it doesn't vibrate as badly as it did before and I'm sure I can use it for a few years.

Murry Riding Mower: The pinion gear got worn out and the steering got loose. Ordered a couple of replacements both of which turned out to be wrong parts. This is an extremely old model and finding any part is a challenge. Raised the gear with washers so the less worn out teeth could be engaged. That worked but they got worn out after a few years. I had to buy the whole steering kit for $139 but found a replacement of a replacement for $62. I'm sure the mower will last a few more years.
